Lake Michigan
We get checked out this morning and two nights of parking is about the same as we paid for each night of lodging. There should be Priceline for parking ramps. We turn left on Michigan Ave. and drive up the Miracle Mile and then onto Lakeshore Drive through the northern burbs. There is some serious money along this stretch of the lake and we notice that gas is still $3.70 a gallon here, almost a dollar a gallon more than we will see 20 miles farther north. Maybe nobody here uses regular unleaded in their German vehicles.
We hug the shore all the way into Wisconsin and through Kenosha and Racine. Racine has been nicely reinvented since the last time we passed through and is really a very attractive community now. It’s almost 1:00 when we pull into Milwaukee. We started this morning in bright sun but now the clouds have rolled in and we are getting some little showers. We stop in the “Historic 3rd Ward,” a renovated warehouse district south of downtown for lunch at a place called “Swig.” This is a painfully urban place and our waiter starts famously distracted but recovers after a while. Mary has a good looking smoked turkey and brie sandwich, and John has a grilled tuna teriyaki sandwich with a cucumber salsa that is nice. We do a little walkabout after lunch checking out this trendy part of town.
John’s raspy throat has deteriorated into a full-blown cold now so he pumps sudafeds and ibuprofen while Mary hits I43 north to Green Bay. We had hoped to poke around here a bit but had to cancel due to illness and just retired to our room at the Comfort Inn. We veg out and catch Dancing with the Stars before going out to Old Chicago to grab a pizza (“Chicago Seven”) and beer before bed. It’s late and our server doesn’t have much to do so he is like a little puppy dog popping up with his tail wagging every few minutes. Quite the change from lunch. We find another 5% gain in the market today so that helps us get to sleep.
